Laboratory assessment of samples involved in Substitution of fish meal with vegetable proteins in cod diets - FC0931

Description
Summary Objective:
An earlier Defra funded study (FC0928) carried out an experimental assessment of the effect of fish meal substitution with vegetable proteins in cod diets. The current proposal is to undertake the proximate analysis of fish feed, faeces, muscle, liver and bone samples already collected to obtain added value from the first study. Specifically the objectives are to:

1. Assess the proximate composition of the experimental diets.
2. Determine changes in fish body composition on substituted diets.
3. Assess changes in bone composition with diet.
4. Assess the effects of substitution on essential fatty acid content.
5. From histological examination of the gut assess pathological changes due to the substituted diets.

Key Customer Purpose:
To help ensure the sustainability of feeds for marine finfish species by optimising the use of limited fish meal resources in formulated diets.
