MANNER - Policy Support Model (MANNER-PSM) - KT0106

Description
The overall objective of the project is to incorporate the latest information on manure nitrogen (N) transformations and losses into an updated version of MANNER (MANure Nitrogen Evaluation Routine) which will act as a policy support model for DEFRA. This will involve updating the ammonia emission and nitrate leaching algorithms currently contained in the MANNER model, and development of a revised manure organic N mineralisation routine that will estimate N release to the next and following crops grown. A new routine, to predict nitrous oxide emissions and denitrification losses following manure applications will also be developed. The new algorithms and routines will be constructed by synthesising data generated from a range of MAFF funded studies that have been undertaken since the scientific development of the original version of MANNER (Version 2.1) in 1996.

The end result will be a new version of MANNER (MANNER-PSM) which will provide direct policy support to DEFRA in assessing the effects of contrasting manure management practices on N losses by ammonia volatilisation, nitrate leaching, nitrous oxide emission and denitrification (i.e N ‘pollution swapping’), and the fertiliser N replacement value of organic manures. MANNER-PSM will provide the scientific basis for updating future revisions of the MAFF Fertiliser Recommendations booklet (RB209) and Managing Livestock Manures booklets etc. This will assist DEFRA in the further development of policies to limit nitrogen losses from agricultural land, for example, in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones and as part of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive, and improving the utilisation of nitrogen contained in organic manures.
Objective
The overall objective of the project is to incorporate the latest information on manure nitrogen (N) transformations and losses into an updated version of MANNER, which will act as a policy support tool for DEFRA (MANNER-PSM). MANNER-PSM will be delivered to DEFRA as an updated version of the current MANNER (Version 4.0) decision support system.

More specifically the objectives of the project are:

1. To incorporate into MANNER-PSM the latest research information on ammonia emissions, nitrate leaching and mineralisation of manure organic N following the land application of manures.

2. To add a new routine to describe N losses by nitrous oxide emission and denitrification.

3. To enhance MANNER to provide policy support to DEFRA on the effect of changing manure management practices on the quantities of N lost by ammonia volatilisation, nitrate leaching nitrous oxide emission and denitrification (i.e. N ‘pollution swapping’).
